And it happened that one day she gave birth to a son - either from her second husband, or from her third - and after giving birth, she lay in bed for a long time, because he scratched her all over with his claws while still in the womb. And when he was born, he was incredibly large - as much as three koyzhasKoyzh (Japanese: qoyz̧) — 1.95 kilograms., as the elders said. And his father liked him, and so did other fathers - and his brothers and sisters doted on him, and from that time on they lived as one friendly family.

When the days had passed, it was time for the Judge to name him. And touching the kitten's chest, the Judge thought for a long time - so long that half the clouds in the sky changed.

"You are strange," he finally said. "Azur does not want to force the sounds of your name from my throat."

And, as the Law laid down, it was decided that the first word that the kitten would say would become his name.

The boy grew faster than the sun moves from east to west. He was strong and agile, and could even match some of his older brothers and sisters in strength. But one day it happened that a trader came to the Jeart tribe - from his short stature and hairless body it was clear that he was a man. He brought with him many strange things, but the kitten's mother liked the fruits most of all - and she bought several for her children. The kitten's brothers and sisters ate them and licked their lips loudly, but the boy bit the fruit only once - and cried out loudly:

"Jaru! Jaru!" - and immediately fell face down on the ground.

His mother, alarmed, picked up the kitten in her arms and ran as fast as she could to the doctor. The doctor only glanced at the boy and, growling low, sent for the Judge.

The Judge arrived soon after, and with him many others who helped him. They all gathered around the kitten, who barely moved, and the Judge thought hard.

"He ate the fruit," the doctor told him, "and fell down lifeless. You must know why this happened."

“Yes, I know,” answered the Judge. “Azur endowed the kitten with strength and dedicated him to himself from birth – but he cannot eat the fruits, for with them all his strength leaves him. But his name – as he said – will be called Jaru.”

And the Judge drew a crooked sign on the kitten's chest.

“But there is one more thing,” said the old woman, who had two fangs missing from her mouth, “that the boy must know.”

“It’s too early for him,” the Judge answered, frowning.

Everyone left, and Jaru's mother took him away - and he lay there, unable to even meow, until the fruit he had eaten came out of him.

Many years and winters have passed since then. Jaru began to grow even faster - and now it became clear that what happened was what often happens. Azur had given the boy strength and physical power, but Menarr, envious, took away part of his mind in return. Even when Jaru was in his eighth summer, he could not remember the names of the brightest stars in the south and north - and many of his peers laughed at him for this. But he bowed his head good-naturedly and answered:

“You are probably smarter than me, but why do you, a smart person, boast of your intelligence, when I, a fool, do not boast of my strength or my height?”

And his fangs shone so brightly when he smiled that the mockers fell silent and went away.

One day, when Jaru was in his sixteenth year, a trader came to the tribe - from his bald head and hairless body it was clear that he was a human. And he sold many strange things that soon the whole tribe crowded around him. Jaru was there with his brothers and sisters; and the trader held out many fruits to them so that they could eat. And Jaru's brothers and sisters took the fruits and began to eat them - only Jaru himself refused and shook his head.

The merchant thought hard, and then called Jara closer to him.

“You don’t even eat fruit,” he said, “and yet you are so strong and powerful. Is there nothing special about you?”

“That’s right, there is,” Jaru smiled proudly, “I have the blessing of Azur.”

- Miracles! - the merchant admired. - But where is this power stored in you?

Jaru thought hard and then answered:

- I don't know.

“Wouldn’t you like to find out?” the merchant smiled slyly.

“That’s right, I want to!” Jaru exclaimed.

- Maybe it's stored in your blood. If you gave me just a couple of drops, I would check it tonight and tell you tomorrow.

Jaru nodded and pricked his finger with his claw. Three drops of blood flowed out of it, and the merchant quickly collected them and bowed low to the young man. The latter bowed back and headed towards the tage.Taga (Jerusalem: ţāgā) is a platform on a tree or any other Jehart dwelling. Judges.

"Judge!" cried Jaru, seeing him. "You know everything: tell me, where does my strength lie?"

The judge turned around, his face darker than eight thunderclouds.

“It’s too early for you to know,” he grinned. “You’re still young.”

Jaru bowed and left empty-handed.

The next morning, Jaru came to the merchant again - and his face was annoyed.

"I mixed your blood with water and drank it," he said. "But it's not in it that my power is stored. In something else, then. You don't know yourself, by any chance?"

“I don’t know,” the young man answered, shaking his head.

- Perhaps you have it stored in your semen. If you gave me some, I would check it tonight and tell you tomorrow.

Jaru nodded and placed his hands on his loins. He gave the merchant eight drops of semen, and the merchant quickly collected them and bowed low to the youth. The youth bowed back and went to the Judge's taga.

"Judge," Jara bowed his head politely when he saw him. "You think I'm small, but I'm already in my sixteenth year. You know everything: tell me, where does my strength lie?"

The judge turned around, his teeth shining brighter than the drops of a spring spring.

- Okay, I'll tell you. But don't you dare tell anyone - do you hear? No one!

Jaru leaned even lower.

"Your mane," the Judge replied. "In its hair, Azur contained all your power."

Jaru bowed and happily left.

The next morning, Jaru came to the merchant again - and his face was annoyed.

"I mixed your seed with wine and drank it," he said. "But your power is not stored in it. In something else, then. You don't know yourself, by any chance?"

“The judge told me,” the young man replied, “but he strictly ordered me not to tell anyone.”

The merchant's whole face grimaced.

- He still considers you a kid - that's why he doesn't allow you to do anything. But you're already so healthy!

“That’s true,” Jaru agreed proudly. “I can decide for myself.”

- So where does your power lie, tell me?

“In the hair of my mane,” answered Jaru. “Azur placed it there.”

The merchant smiled broadly; more than half of his teeth were black.

- Then let me check. What if the Judge doesn't believe you at all and lied so that you wouldn't bother him anymore?

Jaru silently pulled out one hair from his mane and gave it to the merchant. He ran away without even bowing.

Several days passed, and Jaru suddenly fell ill. So badly that he could neither run nor climb trees - and, frightened, he limped to the doctor. The doctor only looked at him and immediately, without saying a word, took him by the hand and led him to the Judge.

“Look,” said the healer, standing before the Judge, “I have brought you the young Jara, and there is no longer any of Azur’s power in him.”

The judge sighed softly and hung his face. The tips of his moustache trembled like fern leaves in the wind.

“Tell me, Jaru the young man,” he said, “does anyone else know where your power is kept?”

"He knows, right," Jaru answered, breathing heavily. "A trader from the human tribe. I gave him a hair from my mane so that he could check whether it was really there."

The judge bared his teeth and growled hoarsely.

"Your power is spent," he waved his hand angrily. "A human merchant took it!"

“But is there any way to bring her back?” asked the healer instead of Jar.

- It's hard. Only by force can the young Jaru return it: he must kill that man. But how can he do this if not two khshadrsXshadr (Jewish xşadr) - about 2000 m. A measure of length corresponding to the average distance at which a jeart can sense its own kind. he won't be able to run?

“There is a way,” said the old woman. “Judge, give me the permission knife.”

The judge took the permitting knife and handed it to the old woman, looking her straight in the eyes.

- Jaru-youth, - she spoke again, - listen to me carefully. With this knife Azur decreed that we should release the lawless from the bonds of life. Keep it with you and be careful not to prick yourself. The merchant will desire even more of your strength, and when the time comes, let him cut your mane with this knife and swallow it. As souls return to Azur after release, so your strength will return to him - and if it is his will, it will once again settle in you.

Jaru took the knife with the very tips of his claws and bowed to the old woman.

“He cannot go to the people alone,” nodded the Judge. “Let his brother and sister accompany him.”

And so it happened that Jaru's elder sister and younger brother went out with him on the road. His sister was a craftswoman and made many wonderful things from clay and stone - and took them with her, tying them in a bag. And his brother was a keeper and knew a lot about the structure of the world and healing - but most of all about how the stars rotate in the sky.

Their night road ran through a dense forest. The sky watered its trees so often that sometimes, tired of the moisture, they got up from their places and looked for a drier patch of land. And so it happened this time: after yesterday's downpour, the old path disappeared and dissolved, and its place was taken by spreading thorny bushes.

“And how do we get to the human tribe?” Jara asked quietly.

- And you see, brother, OdakhalshOdaxalş (Jewish) - Polar Star. "What is that shining in the sky?" his younger brother answered. "We will follow her, and she will lead us through the forest.

And so it happened, as he said. The star had not yet managed to descend to the very earth, and Jaru with his brother and sister had already left the forest and entered the open steppe. The human settlement was ahead, if you walked a couple of khshadrs straight along the path: the warm northern wind brought with it the smells of smoke and food.

“How can we enter the village without being chased away right away?” Jaru asked his brother and sister.

“Then I took my trade with me, brother,” his sister answered. “I’ll lay it out on the ground, as if I were selling it, and then, look, your merchant will show up.”

And so it happened as she said. Just as the guards wanted to stop them, the sister untied her bag and opened it wide - and the guards, nodding, let them through. All three reached the very middle of the village, and there the sister laid out her craft before her.

All the people soon came running to look at the jugs and pots, bowls and cups, and even more so at the images of various animals made of clay, stone and bone. The merchant himself, hearing the noise, came to find out what was going on. And Jaru, smelling it, turned around and growled quietly.

"It was you who took my strength through a hair of my mane!" he exclaimed.

“You’re not very smart, really,” he laughed, spotting Jara in the crowd. “You came to compete with me, completely weakened? So now I’m the leader in this village!”

The merchant waved his hand and ordered that Jar be seized and his brother and sister be driven out of the village. And so it was: the people around, not having time to buy even a single jug, began to shout angrily and pounced on all three. They pushed the sister and brother out, but Jar did not resist, but fell to his knees before the chief.

“Now I will cut off your entire mane,” he laughed again, “and all your remaining strength will enter into me!”

Just as he was about to take the knife from his belt, Jaru handed him his.

"I beg you, chief," he said quietly, "cut me with this knife. So that people will not say later: look, the mighty Jaru was defeated, but so that they will know that of my own free will I gave myself into your hands."

The chief chuckled in surprise, but took the knife from Jaru's hands.

- If you ask so, then so be it.

The blade of the knife flashed in the air, and in a couple of moments the chieftain had cut off Jara's hair - and he, completely exhausted, fell to the ground. The chieftain ordered that a fire be made in front of him, and he himself threw his entire mane into it, down to the last hair. It flared up in the fire and turned to ashes, and the chieftain, burning his fingers from impatience, began to gather it into his handful.

- My power will be greater than the power of the mountains, and my strength will be greater than the strength of the trees!

With these words he poured the ashes into a jug of tree sap and drank it all, to the bottom. But as soon as he took the last sip, he suddenly turned pale and fell to his knees - and Jaru, suddenly stronger, began to rise to his feet.

- The knife you hold in your hands is a releasing one. With it we free the lawless from the bonds of life, and their souls go to Azur. So you have now absorbed my dead power, and the living one has returned to Azur, and he, by his mercy, has returned it to my body!

With these words, Jaru stepped closer to the chieftain and punched him in the heart. He gasped and fell lifelessly on his back.

People did not touch Jara any more, and he himself reached the edge of the village and went home with his sister and brother. And from then on he learned not to trust other people's words and to listen to the punishments of his elders; and he accomplished many more feats, great and wonderful, until the time came for him to leave this life, and his spirit returned to Azur by its death.

Грива Джару —
